Its that time of year again (i.e. the whole of November and December) when all the shops, the radio, and any public place has christmas songs blaring out 24/7, but what is the best christmas song ever.
My personal favourites are Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie and Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses
Most people's fave seems to be fairytale of New York, but I'm sick of this song and Shane McGowan's drunken slurring at the start.
so much of the good stuff has been played to death (Spector, Slade, Wizzard)
Going back to my teens I would pick "Stay another day" by East 17 for the memories though I think it's due to my age rather than how good it is.
'Stay another Day' isn't really a Christmas song, it just happened to be out at Christmas. Of the Christmas records we hardly hear now I like Chris Squire and Alan White's 'Run with the Fox' or Kate Roberts' 'If you wanna help Somebody' or Sheri Dean and the Sobell Skaters with 'Make someone happy this Christmas'. Each different to the other but all totally cool.
Then there is Terry and Arthur (Cole and Waterman) with 'What are we gonna get for Her Indoors?'.
Again LO, this is not a christmas song, although I think it was number 1 at christmas. That said one of my faves stop the cavalry wasn't really a christmas song, although it does contain the line "Wishing I was at home for christmas"
I think the worst xmas no. 1 ever was that awfull cover version of the brilliant Tears for Fears Mad World by Gary and Jules.
Point taken, Robbie... the dire "Mull Of Kintyre" wasn't a Xmas song per se, but it was {as you accept} a Xmastime number 1 {longest running until the tragedy that was the even worse Bryan Adams song "Everything I Do", which spent so long at Number 1 that whole careers were begun and ended during its tenure}. I threw it in as a particularly tasteless joke. And if you're reading this, sorry Macca {Paul not Mike}. You know you could have done much better.
I loved Mull of Kintyre although agree it wasn't a Christmas song. I still have it on 45. I also love Everything I do ... although I'm not a massive fan of Bryan Adams.
