Lord Hanningfield, 69, has been charged with six crimes.
The charges allege that between March 2006 and May 2009, the peer dishonestly submitted claims for expenses to which he knew he was not entitled.
He regularly claimed overnight expenses for staying in London on House of Lords business but it is alleged that he would actually drive the 46 miles to his home near Chelmsford.

Not quite what you suggest, BR. But at 69 he could be assumed to be a forgetful old so-n-so and, so long as he pays the money back and resigns his post, I don't think criminal charges are a justified use of tax payers money.
