judging by the applause after his BBC News appearance.

I've met him several times and like and admire him.

Great personality and sense of humour, but awful lack of judgement during his time in government. He showed that nice people don't always make good politicians.

Yes. He's a typical upper class romanticist about the working class in many ways (you should've grown up down my way, Tone, luv) but he's one of the last of the politicians who know history, read books and aren't afraid to use their breadth of knowledge, and his heart's always been in the right place. He was a fine orator, too, though I once saw Paul Foot completely overshadow him in a far left debate, mainly because Foot knew how to use humour as well as ideology.

Totally agree. Though I've rarely agreed with his policies, I totally respect him and the way he conducts himself. If only today's MPs behaved like him.

The only modern day MP who I really respect is Willam Hague, though Gordon Brown has been growing on me - as a person. I think he was useless as PM - but so may Tony Benn have been!

As he was my local MP for several years, I too have met him on numerous occasions. His wife (Caroline) was lovely too.

Isn't it strange how people who were once demonised are now regarded with almost reverence?

Tony Benn is my all time hero and the only poltician who has never said one single thing or proposed a policy that I ever disagreed with.

I met him once..he was walking uo Holland Pk Road looking for the cinema at Notting Hill Gate and stopped me and asked were it was.

Typical Benn..he has lived for about 50 years just down the road from the cinema and didn't know where it was.

Remember when they found a tramp who had been living in the laneway at the back of house for about a year and he turned out to be a distant
cousin!

Another time he got some sort of weird infection in his foot from drinking about 20 mugs of tea each day.

And of course he is related to the best Miss Marple...Margaret Rutherford.
