The brilliant "Little girl" by the Banned is a great cover of an old Syndicate of Sound single from 1966, with the same riffs,so was punk around in 1966 ? The Inmates 'Dirty water" would fall in the same category.
I have to confess to only knowing 1,2,9,12,14,29,24 and 25 on your list!
A bit less time being a sad pop anorak and investigating some punk is in order I feel ! I always find it hard to decipher where punk ends and new wave starts e.g. The Sex Pistols "Silly thing" sounds the same kind of music to me as the Skids "Into the valley", though the latter would never be described as punk.
The Stranglers sounded like a pubk group in the early days, especially on the classic 2 sider "Something better change" and "Straighten out" though the obvious keyboard sound might just mean it cannot be punk?
So where do you draw the line when selecting what is punk and what is New Wave/OI etc? Is chart stuff deliberately prejudiced against such as Sham 69.?

Easy answer for me this one.
The Stranglers, who I love still, fall into the pub rock category, as they were going out and gigging pre punk, the Skids, who I also love and met and shared their apples and beer with me , were just after the explosion, and therefore were post punk.
Now....the next wave, would have been, the Echo and the Bunnymen, Teardrop explodes, The Skids etc...anyone got a top 25?

So the Stranglers fall into the same category as Dr Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods etc?
Next wave? are we saying 79-81 ? When these TV shows have the Top Ten best Electronic pop or Top Ten best New Romantics etc I get confused. They put Adam Ant and Ultravox in New Romantic but not Depeche Mode, yet put Spandau ballet in, despite only their first 4 singles sounding remotely new romantic!
If you buy a CD compilation of this type of stuff you'll get China Crisis thrown in, who are surely just a pop duo?
I could suggest a few but have to avoid electronic pop.Aside from the obvious hits of the Teardrop Explodes and Echo etc....
Flying Lizards : TV
B-Movie : Marilyn dreams
Stiffs : Goodbye my love
Lene Lovich : Angels
I guess you have to seperate "synth pop", which would discount B Movie and then you could add the Mobiles. It's too confusing for me
Where do you put Joy Division? Fad Gadget? Do you include foreign artists?

Ok heres a top ten of what I consider "post punk"
10. Rikkies Hand.. Fad gadget
9. Reward ..Teardrop Explodes
8.Remeberance Day..B.Movie
7. Gentlemen take Polaroids ....Japan
6.You`ve Got My Number..The Undertones
5.Bullet Proof Heart..Fingerprintz
4.The Headboys.."Shape of Things to come"
3. Adam and the Ants.."Dog Eat dog"
2.The Barracudas."Summer Fun"
1. London Calling by the Clash.
Punk to me only existed between , `76 and 77, the rest , I feel was just just influenced. New wave was a myth created by record companies, the best bands survived, and a seperate category should be made for bands like Television (of which Richard Hell ,previoulsly mentioned, was in), as in many ways, this was , at the time a trendy version of prog rock.
Now , this opens, again, another can of struggling spagetti, as it reverted the punk listener, back to the likes of Pink Floyd and Genensis, due to the fact that that they loved the 2 minute song format, but deep down wanted more.

I didnt put "New Rose" in my list deliberately as the Observer had done. I own the original copy, which apparently is pretty rare, if I did put a Damned song in, it would be "Neat neat Neat". I have allways loved the Saints, great voice, and his work with Nick Cave , four years back was superb.
The Dead Kennedys "Holiday In Cambodia", deserves a mention in a list somewhere, does anyone want to do an american punk top twenty?
I also loved the Tyla Gang, but I cant for the life of me work out what list that would be in, indie rock bands? hmm thats a hard one.
Good list though, well done.

Ah CBGS....That would make a list in itself.
I am one of the few people that actually DO believe That Malcolm Mclaren invented and sold punk to the world.Lovely fellow, only met him once.
However, he did start it in a missplaced way.
The New York Dolls, were undoubtably punk in sound and format, but the image was three years out of date in this country, where , in my opinion, the true revouloution began.
The audience at the time didnt get The Dolls as they appeared as The Sweet but could not play as well as them.
A band can be forgiven for looking ten years out of date , but never 2, 3 or 4 years out of date.
"Sheena", by the Ramones , bought the new music to teen buyers ears, purely because of its title, but did not appear to be taking seriously by the hard core, probably, due to its WEA circulation.
A tune not on my list , is "Cranked Up Really High", by Slaughter and the Dogs, a decent record, although cheaply recorded and mastered, this does some up, the get up and do it attitude, even though the band were obviously not ready yet.
CBGB`S list should include
The Ramones
Patti Smith
Mink Deville
Television
Talking Heads
Next anyone?
I rest my case:cheer:

Thats very interesting to mention Slade on this thread about this era, as they kinda sneaked in, they certainly did not know where they would fit at this time, and I seem to remember they recorded "My baby Left me/ But thats allright Mama", as a medley, and it wasnt a shameful record for a punk, or punkette to own.
But digressing totally away, my mate at school bought Baccarra, "Yes Sir I can Boogie", and we wouldnt talk to him for weeks!
