a man has been dismissed from his charity "job" after it emeraged that a conviction he had
Surely it comes down to the type of conviction!
Rape, murder etc.
No matter how long ago, these offences cannot be ignored when the vulnerable are concerned - do you not agree?
But, the man obviously lied to get his good samaritan job; now, why would he have done that?

So now because of a silly mistake made in 1972 some people have to miss going to hospital because a voluntary driver is not allowed to help out.
Exactly !
Whatever the man has done he has already been punished ... but is STILL being punished 38 years later (and lots of innocents are suffering as a result).
NOTE - The Rehalibitation of Offenders Act (which "wipes clean" offences after a certain period of time) does not apply to the NHS, so they can consider convictions for ever.

Burglary is a no no. But fiddling with gas meter hasn't everyone done that, my late Granddad was a delivery driver for a charity and he was fiddling with his meters trying to make ends meet he even took TV sets home so my old man and his 6 siblings had something to watch.
I came to an end when the landlord evicted them for fiddling the meters and go there own ways but still in contact.
I think that's an outrageous statement ! Everyone ?.
Many years ago my gas meter inadvertently had a small hole develop in the top and somehow a long pin fell in and stopped the little wheel going around.
The electric bills went down two thirds.
That mishap was corrected when they replaced plastic meters with metal ones
When a person has done their time that should be the end. Absolutely. It should be illegal to prevent a person working because of what they did in the past when they have been punished or done their time.
The Oz Labor government was to introduce a privacy law that would have prevented the media from mentioning past convictions once they had been spent. You can imagine the state the Murdoch media got into over that prospect.
Needless to say the policy has now been abandoned.
