FIFA say "Poppies are fine"... 12 Years, 6 Months ago
That'll shove it up the noses of any Germans playing football this weekend.

"We beat you then; we'll beat you now".

Next month - Swastikas will be allowed to be worn at the Olympics next year.

Don't you just love the human species as we watch it go slowly crackers?

I don't agree with Poppies at all only Soldiers in the first 2 wars should be honored. As they British Government introduced National Service as many people signed up but who can blame then ?

Yes, that's right, poppies are all about being anti-German. You win the Jon Snow Award for over-grown student claptrap.

The German FA have made it clear that they have no issue with Poppies being worn. In fact to do otherwise would be disrespectful.

I always thought the poppy was about peace, not war.
A symbol can mean different things to different people. Both my grandfathers were in the great war,my father was in the second war.None of them gloried or even spoke of their horrors afterwards. But all of them would wear a poppy with pride,a memory to fallen/maimed colleges not as lucky as they were.

Rubbish. Google the word.

But they have no place in sport.

If authorised - similar emblems may have to appear, reflecting the Bolivia/Peru, Portugal/Spain, England/Ireland conflicts.

FIFA run football. Nothing else.

Poppies anti German? What a load of bollocks. Poppies are not just about the first and second world wars they are to commemorate and show respect to soldiers who fought and lost their lives in the Falklands, Iraq, etc etc.

Quite right. Prunella has her basic facts wrong again.

With the exception of black armbands, there is no place for symbolism in sport; it must be nipped in the bud.

Fifa's stance is correct. They even condemn 'crossing' by players and don't see why people can't spend just 90 minutes without having to make a political/religious statement.

Banners making non-football points are often confiscated. Can sport not be totally apolitical - like most(all?) popular music?

Yes, yes, for god's sake read the post again and grasp the tone in which it was expressed!

I think we all understand that Poppies are not anti German. They are praising and remembering those who died killing others in our name and with our money. As are many other symbols. I suppose now Spanish players can wear anything commemorating the murder of Basques?

You're clearly just trying to generate a long-running thread so, as they say in Dragon's Den, I'm out.

It's very obvious Prunella was criticising the claim, not making it.

I liked Robert Fisk's piece on poppies in the Independent.

I thought it looked rather sad watching Murdoch being grilled wearing a poppy... as did the grillers.

My problem with poppies is that they represent people wanting to conform to a generous image and don't actually mean anyone remembers or respects anyone.

What you're doing, very offensively, is speaking for other people's motives and meanings. If you want to assume a certain semiotic message, fine, but stop declaring that's what 'it' means for all. It's ill-informed and childish. Plenty of others have made ignorant assumptions about your motives - I would've thought that you wouldn't want to do the same.

here, dear !

My thoughts on this are - IF the FA cared one hoot about Remembrance (rather than just kow-towing to the Poppy Police), then why are they promoting a frivolous game of football at such a time ?
