Great Expectations - extraordinary 12 Years, 4 Months ago
Regular visitors will know that, for me, Charles Dickens is as close to God as they come.
My favourite part of Great Expectations is the first third, as shown tonight.
The BBC at its best. Marvellous camerawork, great casting, fine direction, acting and shots.
The BBC does Dickens. Magnificent.
And Gillian Anderson is extraordinary.
She was great in Bleak House; just as good in this.
How about the young man playing the adult Pip. Wow!

Of course;Pip is Douglas Booth who was also Boy George and is spectacularly gorgeous!

I saw yesterday's today, before watching tonight's episode. I thought Oscar was excellent as the young Pip, and I always like David Suchet. I'm a big fan of Dickens too.

I'd also love to see what the BBC would do with a few Leon Garfield books.

Sadly the second part wasn't nearly as good as the first part; Pip "converted" far too fast; Joe Gargery looked fine whereas a key part of Pip's shame is explained in the novel by how dreadful his clothes were - and how much Joe had tried to smarten himself up, and failed. We were not shown why Wemmick took to Herbert Pocket. It's the weakest part of the novel too but essential not to be rushed and could not be crammed into an hour.

Plus I couldn't take my eyes off Pip's perfect lips!

Well; Part One was brilliant; Part Two not good; Part Three OK but why screw around with the plot (and the ending)?
You cannot do better than Dickens.
Gillian superb; Winstone superb; Suchet good; Booth has such fabulous lips I couldn't concentrate.
Shame this wasn't a 13 part series; why truncate it?

Anyone who hasn't read Dickens, my favourite is Bleak House but I recommend A Tale Of Two Cities as a starter; you'll then be hooked for life,I promise.

I can honestly say I think the David Lean version was better.

I thought it was superb, however I've not read the book.
