I just don't get the conceit of updating it. The whole point of Conan Doyle's stories was his detective was a symbol of Enlightenment reasoning in an era of pre-Enlightenment speculative policing. Bringing that into an era of rationalist-driven policing (yes, yes, still crap, but anyway) undermines the fiction. Everyone's a Sherlock these days.
