TOPIC: Fry and Catholicism
#79955
Fry and Catholicism 12 Years, 3 Months ago
Found this clip by accident...its is from 2010...quite brilliant and powerful argument against the Catholic church.

Stephen Fry Debates Against Catholicism - from the Intelligence Squared debates on Catholicism and the role the Catholic Church plays in the world.

It's a strange trend for so many people to define their identities by what they don't believe in. Dawkins and Co have turned atheism into the dogma du jour. I would have thought well-adjusted rationalists would just get on with their lives. The only people who seem to be obsessed about religion in this country, outside of muslim fundamentalists (who are dangerous and are therefore left well alone by these soft white middle-class poseurs) are atheists. Maybe they're disappointed no one takes much notice of their 'daring' inconoclasm.

I, of course, am an ItDoesn'tMatterIst - since we have no way of knowing for certain, live by what we can see, feel, taste and know about until we die - then we'll find out - or won't but who cares?

Speech part 1

Speech part 2

Possibly one of the bravest and most brilliant of speeches I've ever heard...perhaps we should start to be concerned about Fryism..it's spreading...and he's a very very god orator. Sorry. GOOD orator...possibly the best I've ever seen or heard.

But I would argue JK that it matters greatly to the 'billions' ( as Fry says) who are taken in and brainwashed by religous dictatorships. That's the way to control the masses...through dogma and fear.

Oh yes - that's why I'm generally against organised religions (though Buddhism is pretty harmless) - but some have excellent aspects.

Remind me (old age creeping in) ... didn't this "great orator" once flee into hiding for fear of appearing in front of an audience ?

It wasn't because his performance - in the play "Cell Mates" - was universally slammed by the critics, then ??? HA HA !

Can you refer to someone with mental illness as a "well-adjusted rationalist" ?

The only people who seem to be obsessed about religion in this country, outside of muslim fundamentalists (who are dangerous and are therefore left well alone by these soft white middle-class poseurs) are atheists. Maybe they're disappointed no one takes much notice of their 'daring' inconoclasm.

Did he not also say -

"Sometimes belief means credulity, sometimes an expression of faith and hope which even the most sceptical atheist such as myself cannot but find inspiring"
- source Spectator Lecture at the Royal Geographical Society, The Spectator, 9 May 2009, Pg. 28

So there you have it .... he is both FOR and AGAINST religion (but what else would you expect from a nutter?)

Catholism is no different to capitalism...it depends how it's used to control the masses.

At present capitalism is being hopelessly mismanaged as the Catholic church has been.

People should worry more about the Christian Right in the USA which is deadly.

Fry is an actor who uses his craft in similar ways.

Those speeches are so reminiscent of the Aetheist Religion of which the huymourless Dawkins is Pope of.

my prediction...a massive surge in spiritual beliefs over the next few decades.

(where is Bin Laden's dyalisis machine?)

According to Wiki he makes a habit of absconding !

When 17 he absconded with a family friends credit card and spent huge amounts of money using that credit card (and subsequently spent 3 months in Pucklechurch Prison)

wiki.answers.com/Q/Has_Stephen_Fry_been_to_prison

You haven't done that have you, FC ?
