as for Labour .... what's the voting on John Reid being a "surprise" contender?

Here's the future as I see it:

Christmas, 2008: Tony Blair resigns.

Februrary, 2009: Acting PM Gordon Brown comfortably defeats John Reid to become Labour leader and PM.

June 2010: Labour re-elected with a reduced majority of 15 (approx). David Cameron stares down any attempts to unseat him.

2015: Tory landslide in general election: almost eighteen years to the day of Labour's 1997 landslide.

There's about 400 Labour MPs who are hoping that you are wrong !

They won;t have a single seat left !!

Thing is, ITK, the Labour Party is much more nervous about ditching an unpopular leader than the Tory Party is. This is even more the case when the Party is in government.

Hard to believe, but Harold Wilson was considerably less popular in the late 60s than Blair is now. It would take a major scandal for the parliamentary party to unseat Blair; so, unfortunately, it looks like he'll be able to choose the time of his own departure.

I would, of course, love to be proved wrong!
