Can you make an Internet hit ? 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Ok im thinking out aloud here after reading JKs post on youtube. Surely now we have the axis of 'evil' (lol)
in youtube and myspace and i would add prweb or pressbox to the equation.
If there is a way to break a genuine hit then the net is the way to go. But im not talking about ideals now
i want to create a little experiment and borrowing from the Dogme tradition i want some volunteers. What you need to do is create and market your 'hit' using only the internet to promote it and in that respect you can use only FREE methods to market it. Search engines, myspace, youtube and one or more of the free newswire services.
I believe that you can break a hit using the net only and without spending a penny on advertising and independent PR or pluggers.

Anyone up for this ? we can draw up a charter which all participants have to follow and if they break
it, they must declare it like the Dogme ten commandments.

Please post a reply for your thoughts and let me
know if you are up for this important challenge.
This is a matter of importance for the music industry
because it will settle all the controversy surrounding
artic monkeys, sandi thom and myspace.

Re: Are there Internet "hits" we never see? 17 Years, 7 Months ago
The web bypasses most or all hit-meters. If you don't tell the media, if you don't get your sales scanned (and why would you bother?), etc. how would anyone know you had a hit?

I know people right now who sell hit quantities of CDs... but just not in the short time period required to chart, and not through tills in the right shops (they sell mostly at gigs and mail order). They are invisible to the media and to the industry. Why would the web be any different?

You know... when you're selling 10Ks CDs a year, and earning on T shirts and gigs... unless you get a sudden urge to be Robbie Williams nobody will ever know you except your fans. And to be honest... why should they?

The problem here is that JK is already a "name" so his popularity isn't much of an indicator of getting from zero to something via the internet.

Just a thought

Ah Zoo; you've not spotted the subtle thinking behind my YouTube blog... 17 Years, 7 Months ago
As more and more viewers join (over 12,000 in 4 days so far) I e-mail the positive and nice commentators... and many of those are in America or Australasia or Asia or other far flung places... and I ask them HOW they got to find or hear about the blog.

You would be astonished at the list I've compiled so far.

So - if a HIT goes up on YouTube, I now have a fantastic list to mail. And if the reaction is strong, I reckon the avalanche process begins.

On the other hand... check out the Hey Clip... over 9 million views and not a hit in a million years!!

I also want to bring my own single out.
i have also done alot of research into which forums are better. if you want to try this just give be a few months to get some thing that would be hit worthy writen and recorded (i woudn`t even mind colabrateing with someone as well)you can listen to the stuff i have online already

you will also need a few more people involed to help create a buzz.

Cool move.

Is this perhaps where the "Chart" now lives?

I'm thinking the free to view websites and the responses. Sure a record company could boost the views but without guenine feedback, like you're getting, it would be pretty useless.

It's not the views or downloads that count but real people kindly providing their email addy.
