EX Pop stars 2 Years ago
Interesting article - I shall buy the book.
But I wonder why he didn't bother to talk to me.
I sold over 40 million records as a singer but many more as a producer and record label owner (Genesis, 10cc, Bay City Rollers etc).
From shifting 9 million copies globally of Everyone's Gone To The Moon in 1965 to 4 million Una Paloma Blancas in 1975 - and my version of It Only Takes A Minute (as 100 Ton and a Feather) in 1976 sold ten times the quantity of Take That's version 15 years later.

KISS had a major blip in the 1980', they couldn't fill staduims like they did before.

I think a lot of singers and bands forget to change image, style and venues. The Rolling Stones still make new music and they don't keep playing the 60's or 70's stuff when they tour.

Donny Osmond was not selling at all until he released Soldier Of Love. DJ's and management kept it under wraps because it was Donny singing it. It was a hit.

Bob Geldorf's gob is was ruined him not the songs but they were utter shit.

The Slits I thought were just awful and still do; however Neneh Cherry did Buffalo Stance which is a classic and sold well.

Also I think arena tours has ruined things. Not many arenas in the UK and it takes time and money to get them to them. Sometimes you end up watching the monitors or the big screen so you might as well wait for a DVD to come out.

I did think about going to see Genesis in Birmingham but there was a huge risk going to Birmingham and being told show was cancelled due to Covid was a huge possiablity.

I will wait to see Steve Hackett or Mike & The Mechanics again. Hackett shows are great, he is 72 but still has energy and plays beautifully he could play for another 10 years. Nad Sylvan has incredible vocal chords he could easily be the next Genesis singer if they wanted to re-form. I hired pub bands which were made from members who were in the age early 70's to mid 80's still could effortless. Mind you they were ex-sessions and house bands for the big studios.

Phil Collins was not an original member either.

My friend Tubbs, went to Glasgow and was told the Genesis show was cancelled. As soon as he was in Glasgow after driving from Dartford. I felt sorry for him, he missed work, out of pocket and he wasted fuel. I still have credit for venues that cancelled shows, my theatre credits are never going to be used.

If you can be bothered to Google ‘Rolling Stones setlist’ you will find that they do.

I did, and saw stuff from Voodoo Lounge. If they release a new album they probably do take it on tour like Elton John did Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy live.

He played a classic then alternated every song from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. A good way to promote stuff to those who don't like change.

Green Man, you should stick to commenting on politics and current affairs as your knowledge of popular music is not only close to non-existent but you are prepared to state things without worrying if they are factually correct or relevant

I quite like JK added anecdotes.

Captain Fantastic was released in May 1975 and was debuted by Elton at his Wembley Stadium concert in June of that year. During that concert he didn't alternate new and established songs as you suggest but rather performed a block of new songs from the album and was widely criticised for doing so. There never was a Captain Fantastic tour by Elton in1975 as he sacked his drummer Nigel Olsson and bassist Dee Murray after the release of Captain Fantastic and then went into the studio to record "Rock of the Westies" which was released in October 1975.

You say The Stones still make new music and tour to support the release of those albums. That is a bit of a stretch as their last album of new songs was released over 16 years ago and only a couple of tracks were ever included in any of their subsequent set lists.

You may want to yawn but if you are going to make incorrect statements don't be surprised if someone wants to correct you.

I don't have the Wembley Stadium concert on home media. I have bootlegs from various other shows and countries where the songs are alternated to promote Captain Fantasitc. Yes it's 16 years for the Stones since they released 'newer stuff' but it's their 'newer stuff'.

Green Man, You don't have bootlegs from any Elton John show where he alternated songs from Captain Fantastic with other well known songs because after the Wembley show Elton went back into the studio and recorded another set of new songs and it was that album he toured later in the year. Maybe you are getting confused with some other album he did

Maybe but whose counting ? Most bootlegs are dodgy at best apart from the odd few. The Knickerbockers with their song Lies is on numerous early Beatles bootlegs. My friend Jim Boy has about 12,000 bootlegs in his collection and about 800 or so are Beatles and a lot are iffy but cool to listen to when I am at his. Most Beatles stuff that was bootlegged is out offically.

Do/did you ever go to Beatlesfest which now called Fest Of The Beatles ? There was lots of traders trading bootlegs some good and some truly awful. That's where I got my copy of Badfinger live in Canada LP, the sound is kind of crap but to me it is historic. I had some nice offers for it but I am not departing with is, the recording is on Youtube.

Most of my bootlegs are from my travels to Latvia, Japan, Slovenia, South Africa and Serbia not all recordings are from the soundboard.

I hope the bootlegs of Genesis and Genesis releated gets an offical release, I have seen their live bootlegs CD's go for a lot of money same with KISS stuff especially show from the early 90's.

Given the nature and content of many of the threads on the “Your Views” board on this website I would have thought that the truth and getting facts correct would be important.

Can't be right all the time, even the some Genesis books have misinformation which JK pointed out about 2 years ago.
