Gnarls CD is out on the 3rd April, 12" & 7" are out on the 10th April. The reason it's been allowed to chart this week is that it is the week preceding the Physical release. The reason it was already No.1 on the download chart is that Warners released the download early due to the amount of illegal downloads going on! I guess that's what happens when your official release date is miles away from all the upfront plays. If punters want it they will find it, legal or otherwise!

Lots of controversy... 18 Years, 1 Month ago
people moaning about the absurd chart "rules"... as usual the road to hell is paved with good intentions... bending over backwards not to close another million shops, BARD fail to see the bigger picture.

And what's a "physical release"? A hundred copies? 18 Years, 1 Month ago
Is it true that Morrissey - at 2 - has sold less than 50 downloads?
Is it true that HMV returns are not yet included in the midweeks?
Is it true that the majority of download retailers don't yet have their sales included?

Hi Jonathan,

I would hazard a guess that Morrissey would have sold a ton more downloads than just 50 - so long as he is with iTunes and the other big shakers in the download business.

Most download sales aren't yet included in the chart makeup - this is changing
and I would imagine that within 6 months it will be all important because
CD singles will have largly been eradicated from the charts as the public continue to move to online music purchasing.

Singles are the big winners in the pay download music business and iTunes
have sold over a billion tracks to date.

current sales are 3 million plus per day.

Regards,

David.

Can this be true:

Nearly 7% of all chart music bought this year has been downloaded through a mobile service, according to the Official UK Charts Company (OCC).

(news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4854740.stm)

In this article there is a prediction that by the end of this year 20 per cent of all music sales will be made digitally.

Maybe 20 per cent of single sales but not of ALL music sales.
