TOPIC: 4th of July - Bars Open

4th of July - Bars Open 3 Years, 10 Months ago
This seems the likely date - with one metre distancing, sanitising and other procedures mandatory. And visits might be time limited.

Details are uncertain - but identification (by phone app, perhaps) may be required to facilitate tracing, if necessary.

Ordering/payment will largely be done by app, and the pubs will be far less populated - because of social distancing.

Traffic lights will be outside toilets to reduce queuing - and only small groups permitted in the venues. Drinks will be delivered to your table by PPE clad personnel.

A totally new experience for the British pub, and drinker - with long queues inevitable at city pubs - and penty of employment opportunities for bouncers.

Dear me...sounds like it may be time to save some money and stop going to pubs...Why would anyone pay for such an experience?

Couldn't agree more!

Shopping is nearly as bad - went to John Lewis in Kingston last week - never again.

High-viz jacketed people telling you where to queue (for entry, then departments), what stairs to use (separate for up and down) and which lifts to use (single or family occupancy only)!

Escalator protocol is that you travel 8 steps behind the person in front of you - all new to those of us in Kingston!

Then when the sales person is demonstrating the item (to be purchased), he's totally inaudible because of the distancing and his mask.

One thing is sure - things are going to be very different, for a while.

Might even be just the time to just stay at home for a while!

That sounds a bit depressing. I was thinking of braving John Lewis this week for a deep fat fryer they havent got online, so I will brace myself.

It is good to hear that lifts are restricted to one person or family. Presumably they have fiddled with them so they cant be stopped at another floor by people trying to get in?

Sounds equally hideous and ridiculous Barney. Hope your trip goes better Honey!

I am not going to queue go into a shop or a cinema. I will just continue ordering on line and wait to get the dvd until this nonsense ends. I wonder how many others will follow suit?

Opening the economy and people engaging with it under these circs are not the same thing.

Also, what has happened to the far more important issue of seeing friends and family unimpeded by the State? If I can sit in a cinema or pub, like hell I'm not going to sit in my elderly father's house when he has isolated alone for months.

Bunch of utter imbeciles and morons this Gov....

Yes Honey - the lifts have been adjusted. There's more signage than Heathrow!

Be ready though for constant advice/instruction from the yellow vested folk.

And brace yourself for disappointment - my standard electronic device was unavailable.

This was after being told it was - and listening to an induction monologue and guarantee pitch!

Washrooms have helpful gender specific door attendants - one in/one out system.

However the constant queues (and palarver) would make one seriously consider a postponement!

Stay at home...

I will be selling an iPad to one of those Game tech shops,I heard they are taking all precautions, so be interesting to how that goes. I have been using eBay to buy entertainment over lockdown especially vinyl records.

I will not be going to the cinema, they are a rip-off anyway !

I do miss a pint from the pump.

Not really bothered personally about pubs they are a dying tradition anyway. I always saw pubs as places to meet friends or colleagues, and my understanding is that you won't be able to meet people outside your household/support bubble inside a pub. Since I live on my own and don't have or need a support bubble I won't be going to any pubs for a while. I'm quite happy for pubs to open as groups of young people are already ignoring lockdown rules. I see them having barbecues and drinks outdoors paying lip service to social distancing. At least in a pub the social distancing will be managed and enforced to a degree.

I went into Guildford shopping last friday, and the experience was fine. There was no queuing, however this was a working day, weekends will be busier. It posed no more risk than shopping at essential shops with perspex screens up at most shops.

I'm missing gyms and theatres and there is no sign of these opening anytime soon. If the theatres can't do their pantomimes then they will suffer great financial damage, as they tend to bankroll the rest of the year. I just hope that they will survive as the quality of life will be greatly reduced without them.

Texas is the first state to again close its bars - because of increased coronavirus spread.

After being one of the first to reopen them - amid premature euphoria.

Governor Abbott says it was their biggest mistake - and the huge level of new infections seem to prove it.

Ominous - bearing in mind our grand pub reopening, this coming Saturday...

I am sure it is different in each place, but a friend I spoke to in Texas said they were completely shut off from other people by screens around their table, and had to wait for the waitress to come and serve them.
We would describe that as "safe", I think?

My friend didn't go back to the bar. She said it was pretty much the same as staying at home, so she will in future.

I cant see how pubs who were struggling even before lockdown can possibly continue.
We might be left with only the big chains like Wetherspoons.

Yes, the small pub will be in trouble - having to serve less customers, because of distancing and other regulations.

The bigger outlet, like Wetherspoons, has the space to adapt - like those with gardens and car parks, which can be utilised.

However - like shopping (where now, you virtually have to serve yourself) - many may well prefer to have their beer at home.

Just like they've been doing for the past three months. Social drinking though, in groups, will continue to be the main problem.

Over 1.5 million of us are expected to go to the pub this weekend - mostly on Saturday the 4th of July, when they reopen.

Bearing in mind what happened - after the easing of lockdown regulations for parks and beaches - some disquiet is likely on our streets.

New pub protocols will be applicable - such as identification, distancing and sanitising. And toilet entry will be regulated.

Groups of up to 6 are allowed - with the proviso that they're from a maximum of 2 households. It'll be interesting to see how that's monitored.

Barney, do the 2 households have to be the same 2 households who are forming a bubble, or can it be any 2 households?

I hope it is the same households. It would at least prevent the village bore from pulling up a chair and telling us all about his rare model trains.

This is exactly the problem, the government advice is just not clear enough. When the rules were changed to allow 6 people from up to 6 households from meeting up, many people seemed to misinterpret this as meaning that any 6 people can meet indoors or outdoors with no regard to social distancing, and this is why I think that the rates are going down very very slowly and increasing in some areas. I'm sure the new rules will be interpreted by many as been allowed to meet up with your mates in the pub.

This is indeed the case - people hear 'the pubs are open' - and plan accordingly, with no interest in the regulations.

Pub crawls are being planned all over - with football being watched on phones, if necessary. What's a bubble or a household!

During this weekend, my venue - for my first pint in 105 days - will be carefully considered, with many taverns (I suspect) bypassed first.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53295513

As everyone knows the pubs opened yesterday for the first time in nearly 4 months. However as the pictures show in the link the rules are blatenly been broken, and the bbc don't even mention it. The rules state that two households can meet up indoors or outdoors, but they must observe social distancing of 2 metres (1 metre if wearing masks). The people in the photos are clearly not from the same household and are not 2 metres apart (they are barely 2 inches away from each other). The rules have not been made clear enough and they are been misinterpreted by stupid people. At the same time as this sensible people are not allowed to go to theatres, even if they wear masks and if they go to the cinema on their own they will be surrounded by 14 empty seats, and 16 empty seats if they go in a group of 2, which most people do.
I actually preferred the early days of lockdown, when everyone was in the same boat, know one was going out or holding barbecues in their back garden. Get ready for a second wave and a big increase in cases and deaths

I suspect Robbie it is not that people don't understand the rules, but have had enough of them. They are I imagine not vulnerable individuals, have done the maths and concluded Covid poses next to no real risk to them.

If if it was ebola out there the streets would be empty...!
